Novel lightweight sound source for acoustic testing

Acoustic testing currently involves an expensive and hardly portable set of equipment. In order to minimise costs and to make this technology more portable and automate its use, the capabilities of smartphones as acoustic receivers will be explored.

The aim was to develop a novel lightweight sound source for acoustic testing that provides a more diffuse field than standard loudspeakers and ensures easy portability and regulation compliance.

An indoor positioning method was developed to tag the location of the acoustic measurements. This is based on Bluetooth Low Energy beacons. This novel methodology reduces the costs of experimental tests and is more suitable for self-inspection.

On the other hand, a comparative characterisation of several build materials will be carried out in EURECAT laboratories.

Mobile devices test results

The project partner EURECAT reports on the preparation of the mobile device for sound insulation measurements. A set of experimental measurements has been performed to compare the results between a Class 1 microphone and the smartphone.

Parametric loudspeaker

La Salle and University Ramon Llull performed experimental measurements for the design and testing of an omnidirectional parametric loudspeaker (OPL) prototype that generates audible sound through hundreds of ultrasound transducers set on a sphere.

Acoustic
methodology

EURECAT evaluated the use of mobile devices for airborne sound insulation measurements and developed a methodology for the application of these devices.
